Grana Padano cheese, part of Italy's gastronomic heritage for nearly 1000 years, is the world's best-selling PDO cheese. In 2025, over 6 million wheels (average 38kg) were produced, with almost 2.7 million exported. Created by Benedictine monks to preserve surplus milk, its traditional methods remain unchanged.After 9 months of ageing and after impartial testing by the Protection Consortium, each wheel receives a fire-branded mark for quality. Named for its fine grainy structure ("grana" means "grain" in Italian) and its production area, the Pianura Padana, this cheese has a mellow flavor and can age from 9 to over 24 months. Naturally lactose-free due to its production and aging, it offers quality proteins, vitamins, and calcium.The Grana Padano Protection Consortium is a non-profit organisation, which brings together producers and curers to protect and promote Grana Padano PDO cheese in the world. The Consorzio Tutela Grana Padano (Grana Padano Protection Consortium) ensures that every wheel is produced according to strict standards so that it can be awarded its PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) status and is responsible for promoting and protecting Grana Padano in the world.
